My partner and I are finally starting to look at buying our first home, but we are both pretty clueless about what to actually look for during a walkthrough. We visited a place yesterday that looked great in photos, but I noticed some weird cracking around the door frames and a faint smell of damp in the basement. I'm worried we might miss something major that ends up costing us a fortune in repairs later on. What are the biggest red flags that should make us walk away immediately? Any advice on what to prioritize during a quick 20-minute showing would be super helpful.

Those cracks around the door frames are a classic sign of foundation settling. Definitely get a structural engineer to look at that before even thinking about an offer.

Always check the attic! If you see dark stains on the rafters, that's a sign of a leaky roof. Don't trust the fresh paint job in there.

The smell of damp is a huge red flag. It usually means mold, and mold is a nightmare to get rid of. Walk away, seriously.

Check the age of the water heater and the furnace. If they are ancient, factor that into your budget immediately because those repairs are pricey.

Listen to the floorboards. If you hear excessive creaking or feel soft spots, there might be water damage to the subfloor.

I agree with the previous comment about the water heater. Also, look at the electrical panel. If it's an old fuse box, you'll need to rewire the whole place for insurance purposes.

Look at the neighbors' houses. If they look neglected, it might be a bad sign for the neighborhood as a whole.

Don't ignore the grading around the house. If the ground slopes toward the foundation, you are going to have basement flooding every time it rains.

Exactly, I had to learn that the hard way. Water is the enemy of every home. If you see signs of water intrusion, run.

Check the water pressure in the bathrooms. Turn on all the faucets and flush the toilet at the same time to see if it drops off.

If the house has been on the market for a really long time, ask yourself why. There might be something hidden that previous buyers' inspections uncovered.

That's a good point. Sometimes the 'hidden' issues are just bad neighbors or noise pollution, but usually, it's structural.

Look for fresh paint on just one section of a wall. It's often used to hide water stains or mold patches.

Bring a marble with you to check if the floors are level. Sounds silly, but it works wonders for spotting foundation issues.

That marble trick is genius! I'm doing that when I look at a place next week.

Check the windows. If they are painted shut or have condensation between the panes, that's a big expense to replace.

Always smell for masking agents like heavy air freshener or candles. Sellers use them to cover up the smell of mold or pet urine.

I totally agree. If a place smells like a lavender factory, I immediately become suspicious of what's underneath.

Look at the roof from the street. If you see shingles missing or curling, that's a major bargaining chip for your offer or a reason to skip it.

Don't be afraid to pull back rugs if you can. Some people use them to cover up damaged hardwood floors.
