Is there any end in sight for the current housing inventory shortage?

I've been looking to buy my first home for over a year now, but the competition is just exhausting. Every time a decent place hits the market, it's gone within two days with multiple offers way over the asking price. I keep reading conflicting reports about whether inventory will actually increase next year or if we are stuck in this cycle for the long haul. Does anyone have any insight into when things might actually normalize for buyers? It’s starting to feel like I’ll be renting forever at this rate.

Honestly, I think you're going to be waiting a while. With interest rates where they are, nobody with a sub-3% mortgage is going to list their house. It's a total stalemate.

I feel your pain. I finally gave up and signed another year-long lease last month. It’s better than getting into a bidding war I can’t afford.

It really depends on your local market. In some areas, inventory is starting to creep up, but in major cities, it's still a bloodbath.

I agree with the previous comment. I live in the Midwest and we are seeing homes sit for two weeks now instead of two days. The frenzy is dying down slightly.

Don't hold your breath for a market crash. The supply issue is structural, not just cyclical. We aren't building enough houses to keep up with demand.

My advice? Stop looking at the 'perfect' homes. Look for the ugly ones that have been sitting for a month. You might have better luck there.

It's definitely exhausting. I've been outbid on five houses this year. I've decided to step back and save more for a bigger down payment while I wait.

The inventory shortage is exactly why I decided to move to a smaller town an hour outside the city. It’s the only way to get a fair deal these days.

Are you working with a good agent? Sometimes they know about pocket listings before they even hit the MLS. That’s how we finally got our place.

I think we’re stuck in this cycle for at least another 2-3 years. Until new construction catches up, it’s going to be a seller’s market.

I feel like everyone is just waiting for interest rates to drop, but if they do, prices will probably just spike even higher because more people will jump in.

Exactly, it's a double-edged sword. If rates drop, you gain buying power but lose out to twenty other bidders. It's lose-lose right now.

Keep your head up. I was in your shoes three years ago and I thought the same thing. Eventually, you’ll find a seller who cares more about the buyer than the highest offer.

I've started looking into condos just to get a foot in the door. It's not a house, but it's equity.
