I'm looking to spruce up my front yard this spring, but I honestly don't have the time to spend every weekend weeding and pruning. I need some suggestions for hardy, low-maintenance plants that can survive in full sun and don't require constant watering. I live in a suburban area and really just want something that looks tidy and adds a bit of color without being high-effort. Does anyone have any go-to perennials or shrubs that actually thrive on neglect? Any advice on how to structure the beds to keep maintenance down would be appreciated too.

Honestly, go with ornamental grasses like Karl Foerster. They look great in full sun, don't need much water once established, and you literally just cut them back once a year in late winter.

Great suggestion! I second the ornamental grasses. They add such nice texture and movement to the yard without any fuss.

Daylilies are basically bulletproof. They multiply on their own and handle neglect like champs.

Be careful with daylilies though, they can get a bit invasive if you don't keep an eye on them. They look pretty but they do spread.

Have you considered Coneflowers (Echinacea)? They love the sun, attract pollinators, and look really tidy throughout the summer.

Definitely check out Sedum 'Autumn Joy'. It stays compact, needs almost zero water, and turns a beautiful rusty color in the fall.

I agree with the Sedum recommendation! It's one of the few plants in my yard that I never have to touch.

If you want to keep maintenance down, the secret isn't just the plants, it's the mulch. Put down a thick layer of hardwood mulch and you won't be weeding nearly as much.

That's solid advice. I started using landscape fabric under my mulch too, and it cut my weeding time by about 80%.

Try planting some Russian Sage. It thrives on being ignored, loves the heat, and the purple flowers look amazing against a green lawn.

Russian Sage is great, but make sure you give it enough space. It can get pretty sprawling if it's happy.

Lavender is another good option for full sun, just make sure your soil drains well or they might rot.

I've had bad luck with lavender in my area, it seems to hate the humidity here. Might depend on where exactly the OP is located.

Honestly, just keep it simple. Boxwood shrubs for the structure and some perennials for color. Classic, clean, and very easy to manage.

I second the Boxwood idea. They are very slow growing, so you don't have to prune them constantly.

Whatever you do, don't plant anything that needs deadheading. That's the biggest time sink in the garden.

Good point. Stick to things that are 'self-cleaning' as much as possible.

Thanks for all the great tips everyone, this is exactly what I needed to hear before heading to the nursery this weekend!
